2020 Club Level 4-Way Speech Contest

J.Ken Lund, Rotary Club of West Covina 4-Way Speech Contest Chair

Our program this week is the annual FOUR-WAY TEST SPEECH CONTEST, which pits High School contestants in our area against each other. This leads to a series of eliminations among Club winners throughout our Rotary District, to the Finals at our District 5300 Conference in May. Those in the Finals receive awards in the thousands, with a Grand Prize of $5,000 to the District Winner.

It all begins at the Club level. We are so pleased this year to host contestants from Bishop Amat High School, Mount SAC Academy in West Covina, and West Covina High School. Our esteemed Judging Panel contains the City Manager of West Covina, the President of the West Covina Historical Society, and the CEO of the Emanate Health Foundation.

What is so interesting about this contest is two-fold: the very significant cash awards going to the finalists to be used for their further education, and the requirement that each contestant use real creativity in incorporating the tenets of the Rotary 4-Way Test into the body of his or her talk. It is here that many of our winners are crowned through their creative incorporation of the Rotary test into their talks.

Remember that the Four-Way Test was adopted by Rotary many years ago as a result of it proving itself in a number of life and business situations:

  • Is It the Truth?

  • Is It Fair to All Concerned?

  • Will It Build Good Will and Better Friendships?

  • Will It be Beneficial to All Concerned?

  • Is It FUN? (West Covina Rotary contribution to the Test)
